I, too, have been promoting the Facebook Fan Page (blogged about it in March 2008: http://whyfacebook.com/2008/03/05/on-facebook-p...) and yet, there is so much mileage to be gained from utilizing both a personal Profile and a Fan Page(s).

I have most of my friends separated into Friend Lists and filter my News Feed this way to keep on top of important matters and nurture many key relationships. That wouldn't be possible on just a Fan Page. I see the personal Profile as a powerful medium for strategic professional networking - to see and be seen, to keep that top of mind awareness with key influencers.

I often say to my students and clients that out of 300 million users, you can "only" be friends with 5000 of them and to, therefore, think of that network as a high level mastermind in a way. Choosing who you friend (or don't) is so important. If Facebook should ever reduce the friend limit, so be it.

Re the TOS changing, this is not new news that we can't use our Profiles for commerce. The part you've highlighted above is new - and was likely added to catch the scoundrels who are literally selling Facebook friends and trying to monetize status updates directly.

I'm just sad that your post is worded in such a way to put down other marketers. I know your intentions are kind. I'm a great believer in there are no hard and fast rules for how to do anything, particularly social media. But of course, we can make up our own rules for our own playground. So, as I say, love ya to bits and I know you're an awesome leader in this arena... just had to pop my $0.02 in. ;)

Cheers,
Mari

Re: I Am T-Pain: cheese please

holy sh*t ed that was funny

Re: I Am T-Pain: cheese please

Ed,
Have you just made Phil redundant? :)

Danny

Re: Facebook Lowering The BOOM on “5000 friends”

THE example that Facebook gives is "such as selling your status update to an advertiser." Now that is definitely using FB for commercial purposes AS OPPOSED TO simply making it known on your profile page what you do, what you offer, etc.

It IS possible that Ed's admonition is more tempest in a teapot (finally, I got to use that expression in real life) - I mean, it just may be that FB doesn't want people using their infrastructure for commercial purposes, as in the example FB themselves give. I'm sure they would also have a problem with someone who built up 5,000 friends and then sold that "FB identity" to someone. FB may have no problem whatsoever with business people letting their friends and the world know what they do, what they offer and how you can find out more about these things.

Having said all that, it would be good indeed if FB actually clarified this point.

Re: So Am I!!!!

Got it. You had mentioned a book possilbly called "genius". One of the books that you highly recommend, the audio dropped out and I cannot find the book title that has to do with business building and avoiding the pitfalls of being a hobbyist. Can you give the full title and author so I can purchase. Thanks.
